Its September 29, 1954, Game 1 of the Cleveland Indians-New York Giants World Series at the Polo Grounds in Manhattan. And thats 23-year-old Giants center fielder Willie Mays running down and hauling in Vic Wertz enormous eighth-inning drive for what will be remembered always as one of the greatest catches in World Series history. Mays effort, with runners on first and second and no outs, preserved a 2-2 tie and choked off what could have been a pivotal inning for the heavily-favored Indians. When Giants pinch-hitter Dusty Rhodes connected for a 257-foot homer in the bottom of the 10th, New York had recorded a 5-2 victory and was on its way to a stunning 4-0 Series sweep of its American League opponent.
